Well thought out promotion is the key to having a successful online business, but a lot of people don’t know how best to go about marketing themselves or their business and thus they don’t get the traffic they want as quickly as they want it. This is the primary cause of internet business failure. If you don’t want to fall into this trap, then you need to have a good promotional scheme and the best ones are the ones that are both effective and affordable. There are two effective ways of promoting yourself that are cheap: Search engine submission and ranking.

Search engine submission is a relatively easy way to promote yourself. Most search engines, such as Google and Yahoo have a form you can fill out about yourself and your company and the search engine will handle the promotion for you. This isn’t going to be a flashy promotion, but it will get the word out about your company for either a low cost if you use software to do it automatically for you, or for free if you do it yourself. Although these ads won’t be very elaborate, they are serviceable.

The second way to promote yourself is through sheer scrambling through the rankings and trying to get to the first page in the search engines. This is a lot harder to do, but it’s still low cost or free. Rankings are judged by things like backlinks, keywords, and how much traffic you’ve been getting, so the more traffic you get, the higher up the rankings you’ll get and it will get exponentially better. This takes a lot more work than submission though since you’ll have to really work hard on making your site Google friendly and use other promotional means to get traffic; but the rankings are free to scramble up. Search engine rankings are usually received as a side effect of other successful promotional activities, but they are something to keep an eye on while you’re working.

These two methods of promotion should not be the only ones you use when you are working on bringing traffic to your business, but they are great ones to use alongside your more active methods because they happen either as a side effect of your work or can be done automatically or with only a bit of work. When you are working on promoting your business, then be sure to do these two things along with any other strategies to ensure more well rounded and active promotions.
